NEW DELHI – Bharatiya Janata Party leader Devendra Fadnavis Thursday took oath as chief minister of Maharashtra at a grand ceremony attended by Prime Ministr Narendra Modi and other senior leaders of the party in Mumbai.
Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and Nationalist Congress Party's Ajit Pawar were also sworn in with Fadnavis. Both will be deputy chief ministers. Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy to the three leaders of the "Mahayuti" or grand alliance.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by chief ministers of National Democratic Alliance-ruled states, including Andhra Pradesh's N. Chandrababu Naidu, Uttar Pradesh's Yogi Adityanath, and Bihar's Nitish Kumar. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and some other central ministers were also present.
On Wednesday, leaders of the BJP-led "Mahayuti" had staked their claim before the governor at the Raj Bhawan to form the government in the state. Shinde and Pawar gave letters to the governor supporting Fadnavis for the post.
After meeting the governor, Fadnavis said Pawar would be a deputy chief minister in his government. Fadnavis also said he had requested Shinde to join the government and accept the deputy chief minister's post, but the suspense over the former chief minister's position continued till late Wednesday evening.
After the results of the Maharashtra elections were announced on Nov. 23, there was suspense until Wednesday over who the state's next chief minister would be, though the BJP-led alliance bagged 230 out of 288 seats in the assembly. The BJP alone won 132 seats. The majority mark is 145. End
