MUMBAI – The cost of home-cooked vegetarian thali and non-vegetarian thali rose 7% and 2% on-year, respectively, in November, CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics division said in a release on Thursday. The price of vegetarian thali was INR 32.7, while that of non-vegetarian thali was INR 61.5 during November. However, on month, the cost of vegetarian thali declined by 2%, while that of non-vegetarian thali remained flat, it added.
Cost of vegetable thali rose largely due to increasing prices of tomato and potato, which collectively account for 26% of the thali cost. Prices of potato rose 50% on year to a low base to INR 37 rupees per kg in November from INR 25 per kg during the same period last year. The rise in potato prices can be attributed to a 20% on-year decline in arrivals amid low yield following late blight infestation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Similarly, price of pulses rose 10% on year due to lower opening and pipeline stocks. Prices are expected to dip once fresh arrivals begin in December, the release said.
Further, adding to the cost, vegetable oil prices rose 13% on year due to an import duty hike, coupled with the festive and wedding season demand. On Sept.14, basic customs duty on crude palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower seed oil was increased to 20% from nil, and that on refined palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil was hiked from 12.5% to 32.5%.
However, a further rise in thali costs was limited by a 11% drop in fuel costs, from INR 903 last year for a 14.2 kg liquefied petroleum gas cylinder in Delhi to INR 803 currently. "For the non-vegetarian thali, an estimated decline of 3% on year in broiler prices, which account for 50% of the non-veg thali cost, arrested the cost increase," the release said.
On month, among the TOP--tomato, onion, and potato--basket, prices of all the commodities increased. On month, vegetable oil, onion and potato prices increased by 4%, 4%, and 1%, respectively. "Tomato prices declined 17% on-month with fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat in October, but lower arrivals in November capped further decline," the release said. For the non-vegetarian thali, an estimated 2% rise in broiler prices led to stable thali cost, it added.
The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India, the report said. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common person's expenditure, it added. End
