NEW DELHI – Justice Manmohan was on Thursday sworn in as a Supreme Court judge, taking the court's strength to 33 judges, just one short of its sanctioned strength. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Manmohan.
On Tuesday, the government had cleared the name of judge Manmohan, who was serving as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President (Droupadi Murmu) is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi, to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," the Ministry of Law and Justice had said in a notification.
At a function organised by the Delhi High Court Bar Association, Judge Manmohan had said, "With less than two weeks for retirement, I have been elevated to the Supreme Court... I think I have just made it in the nick of time."
Justice Manmohan was the longest serving judge of a high court with a tenure of 6,110 days, or over 16 years.
Justice Manmohan had enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987. Thereafter, he practised at the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court, dealing with civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. He had also served as a senior panel advocate for the central government in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
In 2003, the high court designated Manmohan a senior advocate. In his private practice, he handled important cases, including the matter relating to the erstwhile Nizam of Hyderabad's jewellery trust, the dispute related to the Claridges Hotel, and the Fatehpur Sikri encroachment case.
Manmohan was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008, and a permanent judge in 2009. He was appointed chief justice of the high court in September. End
