--BJP: Devendra Fadnavis elected Maharashtra legislative party leader 

NEW DELHI – The Bharatiya Janata Party Wednesday elected Devendra Fadnavis as the legislative party leader for Maharashtra, paving the way for him to become the next chief minister of the state.

Earlier in the day, news agency Press Trust of India, citing sources, reported that Fadnavis may be sworn in as the next chief minister of Maharashtra on Thursday. The BJP had appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani as central observers for the Maharashtra legislative party meeting to elect its leader.

Ever since the conclusion of the Assembly elections in the state, there has been significant suspense over who will be the next chief minister. The Mahayuti alliance or grand alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, bagged 230 seats out of 288 seats in the state Assembly, out of which BJP won 132 seats.

While the BJP leaders suggested that Fadnavis should be declared the next chief minister, alliance partner Shiv Sena pitched for a second term for Eknath Shinde. Last week, Shinde said he had left the decision to the BJP leadership to decide on the next chief minister of the state.  End
