NEW DELHI – The government Tuesday cleared Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan for appointment to the Supreme Court. Following Justice Manmohan's appointment, the top court will have 33 judges, just one short of its sanctioned strength.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President (Droupadi Murmu), after consultation with the Chief Justice of India (Sanjiv Khanna), is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India," said Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union minister of state with independent charge of law and justice.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended Manmohan for appointment to the top court, noting that, at present, it has just one judge whose parent high court is Delhi.
Justice Manmohan had enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987. Thereafter, he practised in the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court, dealing with civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. He had also served as a senior panel advocate for the central government in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
In 2003, the high court designated Manmohan a senior advocate. In his private practice, he handled important cases, including the matter relating to the erstwhile nizam of Hyderabad's jewellery trust, the Claridges Hotel dispute, and the Fatehpur Sikri encroachment case.
Manmohan was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008, and a permanent judge in 2009. He was appointed chief justice of the court in September. End
