Deadlock in Parliament to end as parties agree on debate on Constitution

NEW DELHI – After the complete washout of the first week of the Winter Session, the deadlock in Parliament will hopefully end on Tuesday as the government and the opposition parties have agreed to hold discussion on the Constitution next week to mark the 75th year of its adoption. The decision was taken during an all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to break the impasse in parliament. All the parties have agreed to a smooth functioning of parliament from Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said.
Following the meeting, Rijiju told the media that the debate on the Constitution will be held on Dec. 13 and 14 in the Lok Sabha and on Dec. 16 and 17 in the Rajya Sabha. "It is not good to disrupt parliamentary proceedings. We appeal to all opposition leaders to make good on the agreement that all of us will ensure parliament functions smoothly from tomorrow (Tuesday)," Rijiju said.
The Trinamool Congress party will speak on the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh and the Samajwadi Party will speak on the violence in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal during the discussion on the Constitution. The Congress party is likely to raise allegations of bribery against industrialist Gautam Adani during the discussion.
Earlier in the day, both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day amid persistent demands from the Congress and other Opposition members to set aside all business and take up discussion on allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani and his indictment in the US, the unrest in Manipur, and the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which started on Nov. 25, did not conduct any major business as proceedings in both Houses were stalled amid protests by opposition parties. The session is scheduled to end on Dec. 20.
