NEW DELHI – The government Monday "deeply regretted" the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, by a group protesting against the arrest of a Hindu religious leader in Bangladesh. The government said it is enhancing security for Bangladesh's High Commission in New Delhi and assistant high commissions in the country.

The protest near the assistant high commission was organised by a group alleging atrocities on Hindus in the neighbouring country and demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Bangladesh has witnessed violent agitations following the arrest and denial of bail to Das, known for advocating the rights of religious minorities in the country. A lawyer was killed outside a court in Chittagong by a mob and more than 20 people were injured in clashes Tuesday.

Das had reportedly organised multiple protests to draw attention to the alleged atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed was ousted from power in August by a popular uprising. Sheikh Hasina is now in exile in India. Several incidents of attacks on members of minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh after her ouster. An interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is currently in power in Dhaka.  End
