NEW DELHI – After a delay of over a week, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani as central observers for the Maharashtra legislative party meeting to elect its leader – BJP's chief minister pick. According to Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the oath taking ceremony of the new Mahayuti government will take place on Thursday and will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The suspense over the next chief minister of Maharashtra loomed after the BJP put its best ever show and Mahayuti got a brute majority by winning 230 out of 288 seats in the state assembly elections held on Nov. 20. The BJP leaders started demanding that Devendra Fadnavis be made the chief minister as he had led the party to its best ever performance of 132 seats. Shiv Sena leaders, however, made a strong pitch for a second term for Eknath Shinde, saying he had led the alliance to its brute majority in the House.
On Wednesday, Maharashtra's caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde left it to the BJP leadership to decide on the next chief minister of the state. Addressing reporters in Thane, Shinde said Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP's top leadership would decide on the next chief minister and his party would accept their decision. "I've told Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to decide on the next chief minister of the state and I will abide by their decision," Shinde said.
On Thursday, Fadnavis, Shinde and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar met Shah in Delhi. According to Shinde, the meeting was to finalise the name of the Maharashtra chief minister. However, the name was not announced after the meeting. Sources from BJP said that Fadnavis would be the next chief minister.
NCP leader Pawar said there will be one chief minister, who will be from the BJP, and two deputy chief ministers from the allies. He said that the formula for the new Mahayuti government was decided during the meeting with Shah.
According to sources, Shinde has been demanding the home department in the new government. Shinde, citing health reasons, also cancelled a meeting of Mahayuti leaders on Monday to discuss the next government.
The results for the Maharashtra assembly polls were declared on Nov. 23, with the BJP-led alliance winning 230 out of 288 seats. The BJP won 132 seats, the Sena got 57, and Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party won 41. The majority mark is 145. End
