NEW DELHI – India has not received any request for "service of summons or arrest warrant" in connection with the indictment of industrialist Gautam Adani and others by the US Department of Justice in the alleged bribery case, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday at a media briefing. Jaiswal also denied having prior information on the issue.
"Any request by a foreign government for service of summons/arrest warrant is part of mutual legal assistance. Such requests are examined on merits. We have not received any request on this case from the US side," he said.
"This is a legal matter involving private firms and individuals and the US Department of Justice. There are established procedures and legal avenues in such cases which we believe would be followed. The government of India was not informed in advance on the issue," Jaiswal said.
The foreign ministry spokesperson was responding to questions on the indictment of Adani, the chairperson of the Adani Group, in the US over an alleged multi-billion dollar bribery and fraud scheme involving his solar projects in India. US prosecutors on Nov. 20 said Adani, and seven others, including his nephew Sagar Adani, agreed to pay about $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials to receive contracts expected to yield $2 billion of profit over 20 years. According to court records quoted, a judge has issued arrest warrants against those charged, including Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani.
Adani Group has denied the allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against directors of Adani Green Ltd, terming them "baseless", the group spokesperson had said in a statement on Nov. 21. The "charges in the indictment are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty," it said, adding that all possible legal recourse would be sought. End
