NEW DELHI – India has strongly raised the issue of threats and targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities with the government of Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs' Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday. He said India is concerned over the "surge of extremist rhetoric and increasing incidents of violence and provocation" in Bangladesh. He said India has called upon the Bangladesh government to take all steps for the protection of minorities.

"India has consistently and strongly raised with the Bangladesh government the threats and targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities. Our position on the matter is clear - the interim government must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities," Jaiswal said at a press conference.

On the arrest of Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said we have noted that legal processes are underway. We expect that these processes will deal with the case in a just, fair and transparent manner, he said. Bangladesh government had called International Society for Krishna Consciousness a "fundamental organisation." Jaiswal said, "ISKCON is a globally well-regarded organisation with a strong record of social service."

Massive protests erupted across Bangladesh following the arrest and denial of bail to Das, known for advocating the rights and security of religious minorities. Protests outside the Chittagong court turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a lawyer, allegedly at the hands of a mob. More than 20 people were injured in related clashes. Das had reportedly organised multiple protests to draw attention towards atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh after the regime change.

Bangladesh has been on the boil ever since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August this year. Hasina fled Bangladesh in August after widespread protests against her government and is in exile in India. Several incidents of attacks on minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh after Hasina's ouster and an interim government under Muhammad Yunus assumed power.  End
