--MoSPI secy: Hope to have district-level estimates for all surveys from Jan
NEW DELHI – The statistics ministry's surveys will have district-level estimates from January, Secretary Saurabh Garg said Friday, saying that the Centre was working with states to strengthen their statistics programmes.
"From January 2025, we are going to ensure that each of our surveys has the ability to bring out district-level estimates," Garg said at an event organised by Ashoka University's Centre for Economic Data and Analysis. However, he added that the standard of error in these district-level estimates may be "slightly higher".
"...we are asking the states that we will bring out the national and state-level estimates of all the indices, you bring out the district-level... Let's say in a district, you need 100 data points. We are doing 60 for bringing out the state and national (level estimates), you (states) do the balance 40, and we get a healthy district level estimate," Garg said.
Currently, the statistics ministry's key economic indicators, such as CPI inflation and GDP, only have national and state level estimates. Commenting on updating these indicators, Garg reiterated that the base year revision exercise has begun for them, with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation also reviewing the data sources that are available and used in their compilation on account of the emergence of new avenues such as the GST Network and 'scanner data', among others.
"...the amount of data that is available, let's say scanner data, (and) other forms of data which didn't exist 5-7 years back, (we are seeing) how many of those we can incorporate...so that the data we bring out is so much more representative and complete in that sense."
The secretary also said the statistics ministry is focussing on standardising the administrative data generated by various ministries so that it is easier to make comparisons using multiple sets of data. "In fact, in 55 ministries we have statistical advisors, which are people of MoSPI...and they are really our eyes and ears, and are spearheading the data and strategic unit. So this is a major focus. We are going ministry by ministry. We have selected five ministries, then we will start work with others as we move ahead," he said. End
