NEW DELHI – The Centre has decreased the December sugar sales quota for Uttar Pradesh by nearly 15% from last month, but raised it slightly by 2% for Maharashtra. The quotas for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh for December are 803,801 tonnes and 609,078 tonnes, respectively, according to a notification by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Friday.
The sales quota for Karnataka, another major producer of the sweetener, was raised by 1.5% from last month to 312,096 tonnes in December. On Wednesday, the Centre set the domestic sugar sales quota for December at 2.2 million tonnes. The quota for December is down 8.3% on year from 2.4 million tonnes in December 2023 and unchanged from last month.
The market had expected the December sales quota to be around 2.15 million tonnes as demand for sugar is usually weak during winters, traders said. Also, mills across the country have 3.63 million tonnes of sugar stocks as of Nov. 31, the department data showed.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. The Centre has directed sugar mills to pack 20% of their output in jute bags in the current sugar season 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), the department said on Monday. Mills are also mandated to furnish monthly information on jute packaging.
The order said that strict action would be taken against non-compliant sugar mills by reducing the monthly domestic release quota of sugar. The government sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.
The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for December, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
