Water level in key reservoirs down to 147.943 bcm as of Thu, 82% of capacity

MUMBAI – Water levels in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 147.943 billion cubic metres Thursday from 150.639 billion cubic metres Nov. 21, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 82% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres.
The water level as of Thursday was up 26% from the corresponding period last year and 17% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.
The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country. Water levels in the western region were at 34.885 billion cubic metres, which is 93% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the corresponding period last year, the water levels were 80% of the total live storage capacity. Further, ten of the 50 reservoirs were full and 22 were at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. There were no reservoirs in the western region with water below 40% of the storage capacity.
The western region includes Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, which received normal to "large excess" rainfall so far during the northeast monsoon season, which commenced on Oct. 1.
The water levels in the southern region fell to 45.901 billion cubic metres, 84% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. But the water levels in the region during the same period last year were just 43% of the total live storage capacity. In the region, 15 reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity with four reservoirs full, the data showed. There were two reservoirs in the southern region with water at 40% of the storage capacity or less.
In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was at 40.849 billion cubic metres, which was 85% of the total live storage capacity, against 74% a year ago. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was at 14.926 billion cubic metres, which was 72% of the total live storage capacity, against 70% in the corresponding period last year.
In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in reservoirs was 11.382 billion cubic metres, at 57% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 70% a year ago.
Of the 155 reservoirs, 142 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 13 reported storage at 80% or lower of the live capacity.
Since Oct. 1, the country has received 15?low normal rainfall at 88.7 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
