NEW DELHI – Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday condemned the attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh and also demanded the "immediate" release of Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested on Monday at Dhaka International Airport on charges of sedition. Hasina, who fled Bangladesh in August after widespread protests against her government and is in exile in India, released a statement on the current situation in Bangladesh. She called Das’ arrest "unjust" and criticised the Muhammad Yunus government for "harassment (of people) through assaults and arrests".
"A temple has been burnt in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and homes of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, vandalised, looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and security of life and property must be ensured for people of all communities," Hasina said in the statement.
She appealed to the people to stand united against "this kind of terrorism and militancy". It is important to ensure the safety of the lives and property of the common people, Hasina said.
Massive protests erupted across Bangladesh following the arrest and denial of bail to Das, known for advocating the rights and security of religious minorities. Protests outside the Chittagong court turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a lawyer, allegedly at the hands of a mob. More than 20 people were injured in related clashes. Das, a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, had reportedly organised multiple protests to draw attention towards atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh after the regime change.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs condemned the arrest and denial of bail to Das. The ministry also expressed concern over the attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been on boil ever since the ouster of Hasina in August this year. Several incidents of attacks on minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh after the regime change. End
