NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court's collegium Thursday recommended Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan for appointment to the apex court. If the government approves the appointment, the court will work with 33 judges, just one short of its sanctioned strength.

The collegium said Chief Justice Manmohan stands second in the combined all-India seniority list of high court judges, and is the most senior judge in the Delhi High Court. While recommending his name, it said it has taken into consideration the fact that, at present, the Supreme Court has only one judge from the Delhi High Court. "The Supreme Court collegium has, therefore, unanimously recommended that Mr. Justice Manmohan be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India," it said.

Chief Justice Manmohan had enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987. Thereafter he practised in the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court, dealing with civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. Chief Justice Manmohan had also served as a senior panel advocate for the central government in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.

In 2003, the high court designated Manmohan a senior advocate. In his private practice, he handled important cases, including the matter relating to the erstwhile nizam of Hyderabad's jewellery trust, the Claridges Hotel dispute, and the Fatehpur Sikri encroachment case.

Manmohan was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2008, and its permanent judge in 2009. He was appointed chief justice of the high court in September.  End
