NEW DELHI – The Delhi Cabinet Thursday extended the Delhi Electric Vehicle policy till March. The government also decided to roll out the subsidy and road tax exemption pending on the purchase of electric vehicles since Jan. 1. The Delhi government decided to extend the policy in wake of poor air quality in the national capital, Chief Minister Atishi said.
"Electric vehicles purchased on Jan 1, 2024, and after will get a subsidy and road tax exemption, which were halted by the Bharatiya Janata Party when Arvind Kejriwal was sent to jail," Delhi Chief Minister Atishi said at a press conference. The electric vehicle policy was stopped after former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested in an excise policy case.
According to media reports, electric vehicle sales in Delhi witnessed a major fall in September with the state government withdrawing a waiver on road tax on electric cars and two-wheelers.
The Aam Aadmi Party government’s flagship scheme was launched in August 2020 to curb vehicular pollution and increase electronic vehicles nationally to 25% by 2024. The policy expired after three years in August 2023. The government extended it for six months till December. It was supposed to get another six-month extension till January until the EV policy 2.0 was to be finalised. However, it could not be extended for several reasons, including Kejriwal’s arrest.
Under the Delhi government’s electric vehicle policy, a subsidy of INR 5,000 per kWh of battery capacity (up to a maximum of INR 30,000) is provided for the purchase of an electric two-wheeler. Three-wheelers offer a flat subsidy of INR 30,000 per vehicle, regardless of the total cost and battery capacity involved. End
