NEW DELHI - Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Thursday, as the Congress party and other Opposition members continued to press for a discussion on the allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani and his indictment in the US, and the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Parliament has not conducted any major business since the start of the Winter Session on Monday.

Lok Sabha was earlier adjourned till 1200 IST amid protests by Opposition members over the two matters. Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in a by-election from Wayanad constituency in Kerala and Chavan Ravindra Vasantrao, elected in a by-poll from Nanded in Maharashtra, took oath. The House also took up two questions to formally mark the commencement of the Question Hour.

When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 1200 IST, the House adopted a motion regarding extension of time till the last day of the Budget Session for submission of report by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024.

The Rajya Sabha too was adjourned till 1200 IST as the Opposition parties sought a discussion on the Adani issue and Sambhal violence. The House was finally adjourned for the day even as Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar appealed for allowing the proceedings to continue. Dhankhar, who repeatedly disagreed with their arguments on the rule for the proceeding of the Upper House, rejected Opposition members' adjournment notices. The chairman had rejected all the 16 notices served by Opposition members in this regard.  End
