NEW DELHI – Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri would brief the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh on Dec. 11, a source said.
Protests erupted across Bangladesh following the arrest of Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, known for advocating the rights and security of religious minorities, with the Hindu community demanding his release. He was arrested on Monday at Dhaka International Airport in connection with a sedition case and was denied bail. Protests outside the Chittagong court turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a lawyer, allegedly at the hands of a mob. More than 20 people were injured in related clashes.
Das, a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, had reportedly organised multiple protests to draw attention towards atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh after the regime change.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs condemned the arrest and denial of bail to Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh. The ministry also expressed concern over the attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremists in Bangladesh. It urged the Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.
"It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings. We also note with concern the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Das," the ministry had said.
The ministry also said that there are several documented cases of arson and looting of minorities' homes and business establishments, as well as theft and vandalism and desecration of deities and temples. Bangladesh has been on a boil ever since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August this year. Several incidents of attacks on minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh after the regime change. End
