MUMBAI – The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for December at 2.2 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X Wednesday. The quota for the upcoming month is down 8.3% on year from 2.4 million tonnes in December 2023 and unchanged from last month.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. The Centre has directed sugar mills to pack 20% of their output in jute bags in the current sugar season 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), the department said earlier on Monday. Mills are also mandated to furnish information on jute packaging monthly.
Strict action will be taken against non-compliant sugar mills in the form of deduction of the monthly domestic release quota of sugar, the order said. The government sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced. End
