NEW DELHI – Maharashtra’s caretaker Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Wednesday left it to the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership to decide on the next chief minister of the state. Addressing reporters in Thane, Shinde said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP's top leadership would decide on the next chief minister and his party would accept their decision.

"I’ve told Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to decide on the next chief minister of the state and I will abide by their decision," Shinde said. "I’ve told the prime minister that there will be no obstruction in government formation from our end. Whatever decision the senior leadership of the BJP takes regarding the chief minister's post, their candidate will be fully supported by the Shiv Sena."

He also said a meeting of all three parties in the "Mahayuti", or grand alliance, would be held with Shah Thursday and a final decision on the chief minister would be taken thereafter. BJP sources said former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is the frontrunner for the post.

The results for the Maharashtra assembly polls were declared Saturday, with the BJP-led alliance winning 230 out of 288 seats. The BJP won 132 seats, the Sena got 57, and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party won 41. The majority mark is 145.

Soon after the results were declared, the BJP's state unit started demanding that Fadnavis be made chief minister as he had led the party to its best ever performance. Shiv Sena legislators, however, made a strong pitch for a second term for Shinde, saying he had led the alliance to its brute majority in the House.  End
