India's milk output grows 3.8% in 2023-24, albeit at slow pace, says govt report

MUMBAI – Milk production in India increased by 3.78% in 2023-24, according to the government's Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024 released on Tuesday. With total milk production in 2023-24 estimated to be 239.30 million tonnes, the country remains the leading producer of the commodity globally. On the National Milk Day, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Union Minister, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying released the annual publication of Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024. However, milk output increased at a slower pace when compared to 3.83% and 5.77% in 2022-23 and 2021-22, respectively. 

 

Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024 is a document that offers insights into livestock and dairy sector trends. This survey generates data on the production estimates of major livestock products such as milk, eggs, meat, and wool, which plays a pivotal role in policy formulation in the livestock sector. Further, it shows data on veterinary hospitals, polyclinics, cowsheds, state farms, and other infrastructure details, along with the number of artificial inseminations performed, and a global perspective on the livestock sector. 

 

The top five milk producing states during 2023-24 were Uttar Pradesh with a share of 16.21% of total milk production, followed by Rajasthan (14.51%), Madhya Pradesh (8.91%), Gujarat (7.65%), and Maharashtra (6.71%), according to the data. In terms of annual growth rate, the highest annual growth rate is recorded by West Bengal (9.76%), followed by Jharkhand (9.04%), Chhattisgarh (8.62%) and Assam (8.53%) over the previous year.

 

Among the other livestock, the data showed that the production of eggs has increased by 3.18% on-year in 2023-24. The total egg production in the country is estimated as 142.77 billion, during the same period. The major contribution to this production comes from Andhra Pradesh with a share of 17.85%, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.64%), Telangana (12.88%), West Bengal (11.37%) and Karnataka (6.63%). In terms of annual growth rate, the highest growth rate was recorded by Ladakh (75.88%) and followed by Manipur (33.84%) and Uttar Pradesh (29.88%), the data showed. India is the second leading producer of eggs globally. 

 

Similarly, meat production in the country increased by 4.95% on-year. The estimated production of meat is 10.25 million tonnes in 2023-24. Major contribution to the total meat production comes from West Bengal with 12.62% share, followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.29%), Maharashtra (11.28%), Telangana (10.85%) and Andhra Pradesh (10.41%). In terms of annual growth rate, the highest has been recorded in Assam (17.93%), followed by Uttarakhand (15.63%) and Chhattisgarh 11.70(%), the data showed.

 

The total wool production in the country registered a slight growth of 0.22% on year to an estimated projection of 33.69 million kg. Wool production was 33.61 million kg during the previous year. The major contribution to the total wool production comes from Rajasthan with a share of 47.53%, followed by Jammu and Kashmir (23.06%), Gujarat (6.18%), Maharashtra (4.75%), and Himachal Pradesh (4.22%). In terms of annual growth rate, the highest has been recorded by Punjab (22.04%), followed by Tamil Nadu (17.19%) and Gujarat (3.20%), the data showed. End
