NEW DELHI – President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday urged citizens to imbibe constitutional ideals into their lives, do their fundamental duties, and work towards achieving the national goal of a developed India by 2047. She was addressing the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan to mark the 75th year of the adoption of the Constitution.

The Constitution was adopted on Nov. 26, 1949, and it came into effect on Jan. 26, 1950. In 2015, the government declared Nov. 26 as Constitution Day to promote constitutional values.

The president said the Indian Constitution is a live and progressive document. Murmu also highlighted the significant changes brought about in the last few years and mentioned the implementation of Goods and Services Tax and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in her address. "In the last few years, the government has done many unprecedented works for all sections of society, especially the backward classes. Poor people have now got security related to health, home, and food," she said.

President Murmu released the Maithili and Sanskrit versions of the Constitution and a commemorative coin and postage stamp on the occasion.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said that Parliament, after shaping legislation, must also ensure its trajectory in the right direction. "As guardians of democracy, we bear the sacred duty to honour our citizens' rights and aspirations and ceaselessly pursue their dreams. It is for this that June 25 is now set to be celebrated every year, reminding us of the emergency – the darkest period when fundamental rights of citizens were suspended, people were detained without any reason, and civil rights were violated," Dhankhar said.

Earlier, the leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urging him to allow the leaders of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to speak during the function.  End
