MUMBAI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Monday approved three multi-tracking railway projects aggregating to INR 79.27 billion. These projects cover seven districts in three states--Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh--and will be completed in four years, the Committee said in a release.
Of the total, INR 27.73 billion was approved for Manmad-Jalgaon railway line, INR 35.14 billion for Bhusawal-Khandwa railway lines, and the remaining INR 16.4 billion for Prayagraj-Manikpur railway line. These projects will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 639 km and are a result of the Prime Minister Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, the Committee said. These will also enhance connectivity along the Mumbai–Prayagraj–Varanasi route and enable operation of additional passenger trains.
The proposed projects are also expected to promote tourism through improved access to various attractions, including world heritage sites under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization such as Khajuraho, and Ajanta and Ellora Caves. These routes are also essential for the transportation of agricultural products, fertiliser, coal, steel, cement, and containers, the Committee said. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 51 million tonnes per annum. End
