MUMBAI – The Union Cabinet on Monday approved the launch of the National Mission on Natural Farming and allocated INR 24.81 billion for the remainder of the period covered by the 15th Finance Commission, that is, till the end of financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). The share of the government of India is INR 15.84 billion and that of the states is INR 8.97 billion, according to a press release.

"The government of India has launched the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) to promote natural farming in mission mode across the country as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare," the release said.

Earlier in the day, quoting unnamed sources, Informist had exclusively reported that the Union Cabinet on Monday may decide to incentivise farmers to adopt natural farming.

The release further added that in the next two years, the mission will be implemented in 15,000 clusters in gram panchayats and reach 10 million farmers and cover at least 750,000 hectares. "Further, need-based 10,000 Bio-input Resource Centres will be set up to provide easy availability and accessibility to ready-to-use NF (national farming) inputs for farmers," it added.

The mission is designed to support farmers to reduce the input cost of cultivation and dependency on externally purchased inputs, the report said. "Natural farming will build and maintain healthy soil ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and encourage diverse cropping systems to enhance resilience as suitable to the local agroecology."  End
