MUMBAI – India's domestic airlines carried 13.66 million passengers in October, up nearly 8.1% from 12.64 million passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a report Monday. During Jan-Oct, domestic airlines carried 132.15 million passengers, up nearly 5.3% from 125.50 million in the year-ago period.
Among the domestic airlines, Air India, Akasa Air, IndiGo, and SpiceJet increased their market share in October. The market share of the Tata Group-owned Air India, which includes data of Air India Express, rose to 19.4% from 15.1% in September. The market share of IndiGo, India's largest airline, was up marginally at 63.3% from 63% in September.
SpiceJet and Akasa Air's market share rose marginally in October. SpiceJet's market share was up at 2.4% in October from 2% in September. Akasa Air's market share rose to 4.5%, up marginally from 4.4% in September. Vistara's market share fell to 9.1% from 10% in September. Alliance Air's market share fell to 0.7% in October from 0.8% in September. Akasa Air's market share rose to 4.5% in October from 4.4% in September.
In October, Alliance Air, Air India, SpiceJet, Fly Big, Indiaone Air, Star India, and Fly91 – all saw an increase in passenger load factor from the previous month. However, top domestic airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Vistara saw a decline in the passenger load factor in October. Passenger load factor, which measures an airline's efficiency in filling its seats to generate revenue, was the highest for Vistara at 86.1% in October, followed by Akasa Air at 85.7%.
Alliance Air's passenger load factor increased to 73.9% in October from 73.1% the previous month, Air India's passenger load factor rose to 80.8%, up slightly from 80.1% in September and that of SpiceJet rose to 81% in October from 80.4% the month ago.
Star Air's passenger load factor increased to 72.5% in October from 66.7% in September. Fly91's passenger load rose to 63.5%, up from 58.5% in the previous month. Indiaone Air's passenger load factor increased to 76.5% in October from 74.4% in September.
However, Indigo's passenger load factor declined slightly to 82.3% from 82.6% the previous month and that of Akasa Air fell marginally to 85.7% from 85.9% in September. Vistara's passenger load also fell to 86.1% in October from 90.9% in September.
Across the four metros, IndiGo reported the best on-time performance of 71.9% in October, followed by Vistara at 71.4%. The third-best performer was Akasa Air, with an on-time performance of 67.2%, followed by Air India with 66.3%, SpiceJet at 63.8%, and Alliance Air at 54.4%.
The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in October was 1.03%, the DGCA report said. Among the airlines, FlyBig reported the highest cancellation rate of 22.2%, followed by IndiaOne Air at 14.7%. Alliance Air reported the third-highest cancellation rate of 4.06% in October.
Akasa Air reported the lowest cancellation rate of 0.3% and the second-least was Air India, which includes the data of Air India Express, with a cancellation rate of 0.62%. IndiGo reported a cancellation rate of 0.78% in October and Vistara reported a cancellation rate of 1.25%.
A total of 567 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in October, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in October was about 0.42. Flight problems, the major reason for passenger complaints, accounted for 36.2% of the total passenger complaints.
On Monday, shares of IngiGo parent Interglobe Aviation closed at INR 4,244.50 on the National Stock Exchange, up 2.5%. On the BSE, shares of SpiceJet closed at INR 57.42, up 2.9%. End
