India Oct crude steel output up 1.7% on year, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose 1.7% on year to 12.5 million tonnes in October, according to data from the World Steel Association. During the month, the country accounted for over 8.3% of the total global steel output. Globally, crude steel output rose a marginal 0.4% on year to 151.2 million tonnes last month because of a rise in output from China, India, Germany, Turkey, and Brazil, against a fall in production in Japan, the US, Russia, South Korea, and Iran.
For Jan-Oct, global crude steel production was down 1.6% on year at 1.55 billion tonnes, while output in India jumped 5.6% to 123.0 million tonnes.
China, the world's largest producer, reported a rise in crude steel output by 2.9% on year to 81.9 million tonnes last month. For Jan-Oct, the country's output declined 3% on year to 850.7 million tonnes, accounting for 55% of global production for that period.
Steel production in Germany rose 14.7% on year to 3.2 million tonnes in October. Crude steel production in Brazil rose 16.2% on year to 3.1 million tonnes last month, while that in Turkey was up slightly by 0.7% on year to 3.0 million tonnes.
In Japan, crude steel production declined 7.8% on year to 6.9 million tonnes. Production in the US fell 2% on year to 6.6 million tonnes. Russia produced 5.6 million tonnes of steel last month, down 15.2% on year, and output in South Korea fell 18.3% on year to 4.5 million tonnes. Similarly, steel production in Iran was down 1.9% on year to 3.0 million tonnes. End
