NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court Friday issued a notice to the Committee of Management, Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, Varanasi, on a plea filed by Hindu petitioners seeking a survey of the sealed area of Gyanvapi mosque by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the Hindu group, said the petitioners have also filed an application to consolidate all the suits and transfer them from Varanasi district court to Allahabad High Court. This application was not listed for hearing Friday. The court asked Divan to think about whether all matters could be consolidated before the district court itself, so that the high court could be kept as an appellate forum. The court will next hear the case on Dec. 17.
In April 2022, the Varanasi district court ordered an inspection of the mosque premises. During the inspection, a 'Shivling' was claimed to have been found in a pond where Muslim devotees wash their hands and feet before offering prayers. Four Hindu women filed an application before a Varanasi court calling for a survey by the Archaeological Survey of India so it can be determined whether the mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple.
The application was filed in an ongoing case in which the Hindu party was seeking a year-long access to pray at a Hindu shrine behind the western wall of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex. The Hindu party claimed that an ancient temple stood at the site, which was razed during Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's reign and Gyanvapi Mosque was built over it. End
