Maharashtra records 58.25%, Jharkhand 67.63% voter turnout

NEW DELHI – Maharashtra state assembly elections saw a voter turnout of 58.25% based on provisional data, the Election Commission of India said on Wednesday. The turnout in the second phase of the Jharkhand assembly elections was 67.63%, the commission said. Voting for 288 seats in Maharashtra and 38 seats in Jharkhand were held on Wednesday.

 

In addition to the state assembly elections, bye-elections were also held in 15 assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat across 15 states on Wednesday. Bye-polls were also held in nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. With this, voting has concluded for the state assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand and bye-elections in 48 assembly seats and two parliamentary constituencies, the commission said.

 

The poll panel said that the voting was largely peaceful. However, there were some complaints about arbitrary checking and prevention of voters from voting in certain constituencies. The Election Commission said it ordered the suspension of police personnel in Moradabad, Kanpur and Muzaffarnagar for violating the norms and guidelines regarding checking of voters.

 

In Maharashtra, Gadchiroli district saw the highest turnout at 69.63%, while Mumbai City and Thane recorded 49.07% and 49.76%, respectively. There were 4,136 candidates in the fray in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is contesting from Nagpur South West, while Nationalist Congress Party leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is taking on his nephew Yugendra Pawar in Baramati. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is contesting the Kopri-Pachpakhadi seat. In Worli, Aditya Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) is facing the Shiv Sena's Milind Deora. Polling in the state concluded at 1800 IST.

 

In Jharkhand, the overall voter turnout in 38 constituencies surpassed the 67.04% voting recorded in the seats in 2019 assembly elections. Jamtara district recorded the highest turnout at 76.16% and Bokaro saw the lowest turnout at 60.72%. A total of 528 candidates, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, and state Bharatiya Janata Party president Babulal Marandi are in the fray in Jharkhand.

The voter turnout in the first phase of the elections for 43 assembly seats in Jharkhand was 66.65%.

 

The counting of votes will be held on Saturday. End
