Voting begins for Maharashtra, Jharkhand phase 2 Assembly polls

NEW DELHI – Voting for 288 seats in Maharashtra and 38 seats in Jharkhand in the second phase of the Assembly elections commenced at 0700 IST on Wednesday. Polling also began for bypolls to 15 Assembly seats and the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, over 90 million voters will seal the fate of 4,136 candidates. Polling will conclude at 1800 IST.

 

One of the key constituencies to watch out for in Maharashtra is Nagpur South West, where Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis aims to secure victory again. Nationalist Congress Party leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is in the fray from the Baramati seat, facing his nephew Yugendra Pawar, a Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidate. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is contesting the Kopri-Pachpakhadi seat. In Worli, Aditya Thackeray of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) will face Shiv Sena's Milind Deora. The state will see a Shiv Sena versus Shiv Sena (UBT) battle in 49 seats, and a face-off between the NCP-Ajit Pawar faction and NCP-Sharad Pawar faction in 36 seats. 

 

In Jharkhand, over 12 million voters will decide the fate of 528 candidates. Prominent candidates to watch out for include Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, and state Bharatiya Janata Party President Babulal Marandi. The first phase of the elections across 43 Assembly seats in Jharkhand was held on Nov. 13. Counting will take place on Saturday.  End
