MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for dense fog in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for Tuesday. This suggests that the already prevailing dense fog conditions in these states are likely to worsen. The weather agency said very dense fog conditions are likely to prevail in the night and morning over parts of northwest India over the next five days.

The department has also issued an orange alert for fog in Punjab and Haryana for Thursday. Delhi and other adjoining northwest Indian states have seen a major spike in air pollution due to several factors, including burning of farm waste or stubble in the adjoining states of Haryana and Punjab.

India Meteorological Department defines "shallow" fog in a region when visibility drops to 500-1,000 metres, "moderate" fog when visibility is 200–500 metres, "dense" fog when visibility is 50–200 metres, and "very dense" when visibility dips to 50 metres or lower.

The weather bureau also said that an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas around Thursday and move west-northwestwards and become a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around Saturday. Thereafter, it is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the subsequent two days. The department sees hailstorm in Assam and Meghalaya till Wednesday.

A cyclonic circulation lies over south Tamil Nadu and the adjoining Comorin area in lower tropospheric levels. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Monday and on Nicobar Island on Friday and Saturday, according to the bureau.

The agency has issued an advisory to farmers in Tamil Nadu to provide adequate drainage facilities for the removal of excess water from rice, cotton, sugarcane, turmeric and vegetable fields, coconut and banana orchards. It has also suggested undertaking propping in sugarcane and providing mechanical support to banana plants to prevent lodging.

The department said it does not see any significant changes in minimum temperatures over most parts of the country during the next five days.  End
