Delhi-NCR air quality to remain 'very poor' during next 24 hrs, says Skymet

MUMBAI – Skymet, a private weather agency, expects the air quality index of Delhi-National Capital Region to remain in the "very poor" to "severe" category during the next 24 hours.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, an air quality index reading between 301 and 400 is considered "very poor" and between 401 and 500 is considered "severe". During the past 24 hours, the air quality index of the region has remained in the "severe" category.
According to media reports, the air quality index in various areas in Delhi, like Alipur, Anand Vihar, Bawana, Narela, Pusa, and Sonia Vihar touched 500, which is the maximum index. Among the 38 air quality monitoring stations in the region, 21 of them observed an air quality index of 490 or above, The Indian Express reported.
Dense to very dense fog is likely over west Uttar Pradesh, the weather agency said. The India Meteorological Department defines "shallow" fog in a region when visibility drops to 500-1,000 metres, "moderate" fog when visibility is 200–500 metres, "dense" fog when visibility is 50–200 metres, and "very dense" when visibility drops to 50 metres or less.
Moving to southern India, Skymet expects light to moderate rainfall with one or two heavy spells over coastal Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours. Light rainfall is likely over parts of southern coastal Karnataka and light to moderate rain over Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours, it said.
On the weather systems, the agency sees a cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh. Jet stream winds of speed up to 19 knots at 12.6 km above the mean sea level are prevailing over northwest India, it said. End
