India urban unemployment rate eases to 6.4% Jul-Sept from 6.6% Apr-Jun

NEW DELHI – The unemployment rate in India's urban areas eased to 6.4% in Jul-Sept from 6.6% in Apr-Jun, according to the National Sample Survey Office's latest Periodic Labour Force Survey released Monday. The labour force participation rate, on the other hand, rose to a record high of 50.4% in Jul-Sept from 50.1% in the quarter ended June. In the corresponding period a year ago, the labour force participation rate was 49.3%.
The urban unemployment rate was 6.4% in Jul-Sept 2023. The rate had peaked at 20.8% in Apr-Jun 2020, when the government had imposed a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the quarter ended September, the urban unemployment rate among males eased marginally to 5.7% from 5.8% the previous quarter, and to 8.4% among females from 9% in Apr-Jun.
The youth unemployment rate between the age of 15 and 29 eased to 15.9% in Jul-Sept from 16.8% the previous quarter. Among the youth, the female unemployment rate was 21% in Jul-Sept, easing from 23% in Apr-Jun. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for males between the ages of 15 and 29 years eased to 14.2% in the quarter ended September from 14.8% in Apr-Jun.
Unemployment was the highest in Jammu & Kashmir during Jul-Sept at 11.8%, followed by Odisha and Chhattisgarh, where the joblessness rate was 10.6% and 10.4%, respectively. The unemployment rate was the lowest in Delhi at 2.6%, followed by Gujarat at 4% and Karnataka at 4.8%.
The female labour force participation lagged the male participation rate in Jul-Sept. The female labour force participation rate was just 25.5% in Jul-Sept, as against 75% participation for males. Labour force participation rate is defined as the percentage of people in the population above the age of 15 years working or available for work.
The worker population ratio, the percentage of employed persons in the population, rose to a record high of 47.2% in Jul-Sept from 46.8% in Apr-Jun. The worker population ratio among males rose to 70.7% in the quarter ended September from 70.4% in Apr-Jun, and for women, it rose to 23.4% from 23% a quarter ago.
The survey covered 45,005 urban households and 170,598 people during the quarter. The statistics office releases the Periodic Labour Force Survey quarterly and annually. While the annual survey covers both rural and urban areas, the quarterly survey is only for urban areas.
