Freight traffic at major Indian ports up 3.75% YoY in Apr-Oct

AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports rose around 3.8% from a year ago in Apr-Oct to 481.97 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. Crude oil and petroleum products, which account for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country, rose 1.6% on year to 142.61 million tonnes in Apr-Oct.
Other than crude oil, container traffic rose 3.84% in tonnage terms to 110.35 million tonnes, and thermal coal cargo rose 3.07% on year to 75.37 million tonnes in Apr-Oct. Miscellaneous cargo traffic was up 27.1% on year at 61.63 million tonnes in Apr-Oct.
The marginal rise in cargo handled in Apr-Oct was due to lower coking coal volumes, which fell 6.4% on year to 33.34 million tonnes. Iron ore volumes were down 7.2% on year at 29.08 million tonnes and finished fertiliser cargo was down 23.3% on year at 4.2 million tonnes. On the other hand, raw fertiliser cargo rose 5.9% on year to 5.67 million tonnes.
Among ports, Paradip Port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Oct at 84.92 million tonnes, followed by Deendayal Port at 83.32 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 52.38 million tonnes.
