NEW DELHI – Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Monday said it was essential to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party from amending the Constitution, and that can be done by stopping it from winning state assembly elections as amendments to several constitutional provisions require ratification by 50% states.

Kharge urged people to vote for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance in the Jharkhand Assembly election. The Congress president was addressing a rally in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, which will go to polls in the first phase on Wednesday.

"When the BJP wanted to change the constitution, we started a campaign to stop the BJP. People didn’t give a majority to BJP in Parliament and that is why the BJP couldn’t change the constitution. Had there been 20 seats less, Modi would not have been the prime minister...He (Modi) is now on two legs--Nitish Kumar (Janata Dal (United) and N. Chandrababu Naidu (Telugu Desam Party)," Kharge said.

Kharge also attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of dividing the people in the name of religion and caste. He said that it is the BJP that divides and cuts people in the name of religion and caste while referring to BJP's Batenge to Katenge slogan.

"... You (BJP) are the one who divide people. You are the one who divide and cut the people on the name of religion. Whenever there are rumours, your people are the ones who always make the first move to cut people... Now you say Batenge to Katenge. This country is one and people live here with unity. So, whom you’re talking about? The country will not be divided," Kharge said.

The Congress president also took jibe at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying that the Uttar Pradesh chief minister should not befool people with saffron attire and should wear white like other politicians. Referring to Yogi Adityanath, he Congress president said that sadhus do not preach division, but unity among people.

The Congress is contesting the Jharkhand ssembly elections in alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation. Of the 81 seats, the JMM is contesting 41 seats, the Congress 30, the RJD and the CPI(ML) Liberation are contesting six and four seats respectively.

The second phase of elections in the state will be held on Nov. 20 along with Maharashtra and the results will be announced on Nov 23. In the 2019 polls, the JMM-led alliance bagged 47 seats, with the JMM winning 30 seats, Congress 16, and RJD 1. The BJP had won 25 seats. End
