--CONTEXT: Comments by AMFI Chief Executive Chalasani on Oct MF data

MUMBAI – Open-ended equity fund net inflows hit an all-time high in October despite a weak market, the Association of Mutual Funds in India Chief Executive Venkat Chalasani said Monday. Open-ended equity funds reported net inflows of INR 418.87 billion in October, though the assets under management in the category fell by nearly 4% to INR 29.89 trillion.

Overall, the mutual fund industry saw net inflows of INR 2.40 trillion in October and the assets under management remained nearly flat at INR 67.26 trillion as on Oct 31.

"The Sensex has seen negative growth and there's a lot of uncertainty in the markets on account of the US elections, which is, of course, past now. Some FII selling happened during the last month. All these factors have resulted in a negative mark to market," Chalasani said in a conference call.

Within equity funds, sectoral and thematic funds saw the highest inflows at INR 122.78 billion in October. The large-cap funds, mid-cap funds and small-cap funds continued to see traction in October. Net inflows into small-cap funds were at a 10-month high at INR 37.71 billion in October. Large-cap funds saw net inflows of INR 34.52 billion and multi-cap funds saw net inflows of INR 35.97 billion.

Net inflows in hybrid funds were also at a three-month-high at INR 168.63 billion, AMFI data showed. The assets under management of hybrid funds were down 0.3% to INR 8.73 trillion as on Oct. 31. Within hybrid funds, arbitrage funds saw the highest net inflows at INR 71.82 billion, followed by multi-asset allocation funds at INR 37.97 billion.

The market has preferred hybrid funds due to ongoing volatility in the equity markets, Hitesh Thakkar, acting chief executive officer at ITI Mutual Fund said in a note. "We believe that the market is volatile due to short-term factors like a weak domestic earning cycle and delayed government spending for capital-intensive sectors among others. However, investors should continue investing in equity mutual funds with 3-5 years' time horizon." the note said.

Within other schemes, 'other ETFs' (exchange-traded funds), which exclude gold ETFs, reported net inflows of INR 134.42 billion, the highest in the category in October. Index funds reported net inflows of INR 79.31 billion and net inflows into gold ETF hit an all-time high at INR 19.61 billion.

The open-ended debt funds reported a net inflow of INR 1.57 trillion and the assets under management were up 11.1% on the month to INR 16.64 trillion as on Oct. 31. Liquid funds saw net inflows of INR 838.63 billion in October, while overnight funds and money market funds reported net inflows INR 257.84 billion and INR 253.03 billion, respectively.

The mutual fund industry came out with 29 new fund offers which garnered a total of INR 60.78 billion in October. Out of the new fund offers, 17 were index funds, which garnered INR 18.95 billion. Fund houses launched four new fund offers in the sectoral and thematic category in October, collecting INR 35.17 billion.

Net inflow into systematic investment plans was at an all-time high of INR 253.23 billion in October against INR 245.09 billion a month ago. The total assets under management in systematic investment plans were at INR 13.30 trillion as on Oct 31.  End
