MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Friday. The weather department said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours and move towards the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts.

A fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala from Monday to Thursday, the weather agency said. Heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Puducherry, and Rayalaseema during the next seven days, it said.

During the northeast monsoon season so far, the south peninsula region recorded rainfall of 18.5 mm, 41% lower than normal. Rainfall in east and northeast India was down 1% during the week at 7.8 mm, according to IMD. Similarly, central India received 59% below-normal rainfall at 1.5 mm during the week. Northwest India received 99% below-normal showers during the week at 0.0 mm. Subdivisions such as west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal, east Rajasthan, and west Rajasthan recorded no rainfall during the week. Only Uttarakhand subdivision received some rainfall at 0.7 mm. 

Meanwhile, the department said dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail over Himachal Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday in the morning hours. End
