MUMBAI – The government on Thursday withdrew the weekly sugar stock disclosure order for traders, dealers, wholesalers, and big chain retailers and processors, citing sufficient sugar availability to meet domestic needs, the Food and Public Distribution Department said in a notification. The order follows the government's advisory last year which had mandated the regular updation of stock holdings. The latest notification also stated that prices, production, and availability will be reviewed by the government periodically and further decisions will be taken accordingly.

In September 2023, the food ministry had asked sugar mills to disclose the quantity of sugar sold every month to ensure sufficient availability at reasonable prices in the country. In September, the All India Sugar Trade Association had written to the ministry, demanding immediate withdrawal of the stock disclosure order.

The latest move is expected to ease the reporting burden on businesses in the sugar supply chain, while still ensuring that the government can intervene if there are any future concerns regarding sugar supply or price fluctuations.  End
