MUMBAI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian meal rose 6% on month and a non-vegetarian thali increased 4% in October as prices of ingredients, especially vegetables, shot up during the month, according to a report by CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics. On an annual basis, the cost of vegetable thali rose 20%, while the cost of non-veg thali increased 5% in October, the report said.
The increase in the cost was mainly due to higher prices of vegetables, which account for about 40% of the cost of a vegetarian thali, the report said.
Tomato prices rose 39% on month in October amid heavy rainfall in the tomato growing areas. Onion prices rose 6% on month because of incessant rainfall, which damaged crops and delayed kharif harvests by 10–15 days, the report said. Vegetable oil prices rose 10% on month in October on account of an increase in import duty coupled with healthy festive demand, it said.
On an annual basis, prices of onion and potato rose 46% and 51% on-year, respectively, in October. Cold storage stocks of rabi potato, which account for 95% of annual potato production, are declining, and fresh arrivals are slated to begin only from Dec-Jan, it said. Tomato prices more than doubled from a year ago due to the rains in September, the report said. However, with supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, tomato prices are expected to stabilise in November, it said. The price of pulses, which account for 9% of the cost of vegetable thali, rose 11% on year due to lower stocks and festive demand. Prices are expected to dip from December once fresh arrivals begin, the report said.
On non-veg thali, the report said lower broiler prices limited the rise in costs. Broiler prices, which account for 50% of the cost of non-veg thali, declined 9% on-year whereas the prices of vegetables, which account for almost 22% of the cost, witnessed an increase, the report said.
The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India. End
