NEW DELHI – Donald Trump is set to return to the White House after he won the key swing state of Pennsylvania, with the Associated Press saying that he had won 267 electoral votes compared with 224 for Vice-President Kamala Harris. US presidential candidates require a minimum of 270 electoral votes to win the election.

Speaking to his supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, in the early hours of Wednesday (US time), Trump thanked Americans for electing him as the 47th president. Should his victory be confirmed, Trump will become only the second president ever, and the first in over a hundred years, to serve two terms that are not consecutive.

Meanwhile, Fox News has already called the election in favour of Trump, estimating that he has won 277 electoral votes against 226 for Harris. In addition to Pennsylvania, Trump also won the key battle states of North Carolina and Georgia. He is also leading in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Also speaking in Florida to Republican supporters, J.D. Vance, Trump's pick for vice president, said they had "just witnessed the greatest political comeback in the history of the United States of America."

Earlier, in Washington, a Harris campaign official said the incumbent vice president would not be speaking that night. "We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet. We will continue overnight to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken," said Cedric Richmond, co-chair of Harris' presidential campaign.

In addition to a likely White House win, the Republicans have also reclaimed a majority in the Senate, with Trump calling it an "unprecedented and powerful mandate".  End
