NEW DELHI - Oil marketing companies procured 5.85 billion litres of ethanol and achieved a cumulative blending of 13.8% as of Oct. 1 in the ethanol supply year 2023-24 (Nov-Oct), according to a monthly report by the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell. In September, oil companies bought 624 million litres of the biofuel and achieved 15.9% blending with petrol.
Oil companies buy ethanol to blend with petrol to promote green mobility and achieve blending targets. To reduce dependence on crude oil, the government has set a target of achieving 15% blending of ethanol with petrol in 2023-24, 18% in the subsequent year, and 20% in 2025-26. To achieve the 20% blending aim, India needs about 10.16 bln ltr of ethanol. During Nov-Sep, oil companies have bought 6.07 billion litres of ethanol.
Taking the ethanol blending programme further, the government has asked NITI Aayog to prepare a roadmap for increasing ethanol blending to 25% as the government is confident of achieving the 20% blending target by 2025-26. Oil companies have started dispensing E20 petrol at more than 16,750 retail outlets across the country.
For the 2024-25 ethanol supply year that started on Nov. 1, oil marketing companies received robust response as they invited bids for 9.16 billion litres ethanol for which distillery units offered to supply 9.70 billion litres. From November, more ethanol will come from grain-based distilleries as they have bagged higher allocation than sugarcane-based units in 2024-25 (Nov-Oct). End
