NEW DELHI – India's food grain output during kharif season is estimated at a record 164.7 million tonnes due to good production of rice, jowar, and maize, according to the first advance estimate for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) released by the government on Tuesday. The food grain output was 155.8 million tonnes during the kharif season last year.
"For the first time, data from the Digital Crop Survey, which is being conducted under the Digital Agriculture Mission in collaboration with state governments, has been utilised to prepare area estimates," the farm ministry said in the release.
Based on the survey, rice production is estimated at a record 119.9 million tonnes during the kharif season. The digital crop survey-based crop area estimation has been done for Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha, where all districts were covered under the survey. "This has led to a substantial rise in area under rice particularly in Uttar Pradesh," the farm ministry said in the release.
According to media reports, the first advance estimate for the kharif crop output was delayed amidst the substantial rise in rice output estimates derived from the digital survey. Typically, the crop estimate is released in the third week of September.
The digital crop survey, which will replace the manual Girdawari system, is an important step towards arriving at robust crop area estimates, the ministry said. The Girdawari system has harvest inspections done twice a year during kharif and rabi season by government officials at village levels.
The digital crop survey is done using the latest technologies like Geographic Information System and Global Positioning System, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and satellite mapping, the ministry said.
Kharif maize production is pegged at a record 24.5 mln tn, up 10.4% from 22.2 mln tn in the last kharif season. Maize is a widely sought-after feedstock by the poultry industry and distillery units for ethanol making. The coarse cereal production during the kharif season is pegged at 37.8 million tonnes, up from 35.5 million tonnes last year.
However, kharif pulses production is seen slightly lower at 6.95 million tonnes, down from 7.0 million tonnes last year. While the production of urad is estimated to decline 25%, output of tur and moong are seen increasing 2.9% and 16.7%, respectively.
Total oilseed production during kharif season is estimated to rise 6.2% on year to 25.7 million tonnes. Amongst kharif oilseed complex, groundnut output is pegged at a record 10.4 million tonnes, and soybean at 13.4 million tonnes. To reduce the dependence on edible oil imports, the government, in October, allocated INR 101 billion under the National Edible Oil Mission to increase domestic oilseed cultivation. Under the programme, the government will give free breeder seeds to boost oilseed cultivation, Farm Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said last month.
In the commercial crop basket, production of sugarcane, jute, and cotton is seen lower. Sugarcane output is estimated 2.9% lower at 439.9 million tonnes and cotton output is pegged 8% down at 29.9 million tonnes.
