Tata Motors total sales flat YoY at 82,682 units in Oct; exports down 13% YoY

MUMBAI – Tata Motors Ltd.'s total vehicle sales, including commercial and passenger vehicles, in October were 82,682 units, flat from last year, as a marginal increase in domestic despatches was offset by lower exports. During the month, the automaker sold a total of 80,839 units in India, against 80,825 units in the year-ago period. However, its exports declined 13% on year to 1,843 units.
In October, the Tata Group company sold a total of 48,423 passenger vehicles, against 48,637 units in the year-ago period. In India, it sold 48,131 units, compared to 48,337 units year ago. In comparison, its exports fell 3% on year to 292 units. In the electric passenger vehicle segment, the company recorded sales of 5,355 units during the month, down 2% on year.
In the passenger vehicle category, some of the company's peers reported better sales on a year-on-year basis. Hyundai Motor India Ltd.'s domestic sales were up 1% on year in October, and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s sales surged 25% on year. In comparison, domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. fell 5% on year in October.
In the commercial vehicle category, Tata Motors sold a total of 34,259 units in October, compared to 34,317 units in the year-ago period. The company's domestic sales rose 1% on year to 32,708 units, but exports fell 15% on year to 1,551 units. In October, despatches of heavy trucks fell by 2% on year to 10,024 units and those of small commercial vehicles fell 3% on year to 14,013 units. Slightly over 70% of Tata Motors' commercial vehicle sales come from these two segments. In comparison, sales of passenger carriers grew 13% on year to 2,835 units, and despatches of intermediate, light and medium trucks rose 9% on year to 5,836 units.
On Thursday, shares of Tata Motors ended at INR 834.05 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.7% from the previous close. End
