IMD sees heavy rain over parts of south India till Sat; smog likely in Delhi

MUMBAI - The India Meteorological Department said Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and south interior Karnataka are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall till Saturday. These heavy rains over parts of southern India are caused due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh coast at lower tropospheric levels, it said.
Moving to the northwest India, the weather bureau expects above normal temperatures to continue during the week. However, no significant rainfall is likely over the remaining parts of the country next week.
The weather bureau also said that New Delhi is likely to experience smog or shallow fog or mist during the night and morning hours from Thursday till Sunday. Currently, temperatures in Delhi are above normal by 4-6 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature was 33-35 degree Celsius and the minimum was 18-22 degree Celsius.
With the dropping temperatures in Delhi and severe air quality issues every winter, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has imposed a total ban on the manufacturing, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers until Jan. 1. "There will be 'Complete Ban' on all kinds of firecrackers on manufacturing, storage, selling (including delivery through online marketing platforms) and bursting of all kinds of firecrackers up to 01.01.2025 in the territory of NCT of Delhi," the committee had said in a notice.
