NEW DELHI – India and Germany on Friday signed memoranda of understanding in the fields of critical and emerging technology, skill development, and innovation at the 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations in New Delhi, co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The biennial consultation format, launched in 2011, allows for a comprehensive review of cooperation and identification of new areas of engagement at the Cabinet level between the two countries.
India and Germany signed nearly eight memoranda of understanding and joint declarations on green hydrogen roadmap, legal matters, employment and labour, education and skill development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the agreement on critical and emerging technologies, skill development and innovation would benefit sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and clean energy. "The growing cooperation in the defence and security sectors is a symbol of our deep mutual trust. The agreement on the exchange of classified information is a new step in this direction. The Mutual Legal Assistant Treaty concluded today will strengthen our joint efforts to deal with terrorism and separatist elements," Modi said.
He also expressed concern over the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, and said that India believes these issues should be resolved with dialogue and diplomacy. "The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of concern for both of us. India has always believed that problems cannot be solved by war and India is ready to make every possible contribution to the restoration of peace," Modi said.
"We both agree on freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region under international laws. We both agree with the fact that global forums established in the 20th century aren't able to face the challenges of the 21st century. Reform is needed in all multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council. India and Germany will continue to actively cooperate in these areas," he said.
Chancellor Scholz said that growing together with innovation, mobility and sustainability was the motto of the 7th Indo-German Intergovernmental Consultations. "It is a fitting motto because it illustrates the extent to which India and Germany both benefit in equal measure from this good and trusting cooperation. This is especially true for the field of economic ties," the German chancellor said.
Germany had become India's most important trading partner in the European Union, Scholz said, adding that he was determined to further strengthen the ties and build on this link and cooperation. "As chancellor, I strongly favour an ambitious free trade agreement between India and the European Union. I believe that both sides would benefit, and it should be our ambition to make headway in that regard," Scholz said. End
