MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha and West Bengal Friday due to severe cyclonic storm Dana over north coastal Odisha, it said in a release. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts of Odisha, and over the east and west Medinipur districts of the Gangetic West Bengal on Friday, the department said.
Severe cyclonic storm Dana moved north-northwestwards and crossed the north Odisha coast between 0130 IST and 0330 IST on Friday, with a wind speed of 100–110 km per hour, gusting to 120 km per hour. It continued to move north-northwestwards and weakened into a cyclonic storm over north coastal Odisha, the department said.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over parts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Angul, Nayagarh, Khorda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha on Friday, the weather agency said. South Jharkand is likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday, the weather bureau said.
The weather agency has warned fishermen to completely suspend fishing operations in the Northwest Bay of Bengal till 1200 IST Friday. Fishermen are also advised not to venture into the northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha and West Bengal coasts on Friday.
On weather systems, the bureau said that a cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea, off the south Kerala coast, at lower tropospheric levels. A cyclonic circulation is an atmospheric wind flow at the upper levels associated with any low pressure system. The wind flow is counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the southern region of the country, the weather department has predicted heavy to heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala and Mahe on Friday. However, the department said there would be no significant rainfall over northeast, central, west and northwest India during the week. End
