NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Centre to give a status report in three weeks on the measures it has taken to counter the issue of rising deepkfake technologies. The high court said that the issue needs serious consideration and asked the Centre whether it has set up an in-house mechanism or a panel to examine how to tackle the issue.

"If not, then we will set up a committee which will look into it," said Chief Justice Manmohan. The court said that the public need to know what was being done and if members of any panel set up by the Centre had the wherewithal to examine the issue. "What are you doing? Everyday deepfakes are on the increase...I am glad that industry people have started taking some initiatives and are spreading awareness about it among consumers," said the court.

The Centre said that it was looking into the matter and there were people in place. However, due to the sensitivity of the issue, it might not be possible to share all the details publicly. To this, the court said that particulars of the panel need not be disclosed. It was only seeking information on whether any steps were being taken, the court added. The court will hear the case next, on Nov. 21.

The court was hearing petitions by advocate Chaitanya Rohilla and journalist Rajat Sharma seeking directions from the court to the Centre to identify and block websites providing access to deepfakes and artificial technologies. The petitioners sought the court to direct the Centre to ensure fair implementation of artificial intelligence and sought guidelines for the same in strict accordance with the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.  End
