Water level in southern reservoirs at 49.112 bcm, 90% of capacity

MUMBAI – Water level in the southern region of the country was 49.112 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, up from 47.998 billion cubic metres last week, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The water level in 43 key reservoirs in the region is at 90% of the live storage capacity, up sharply from 47% in the corresponding period last year. Of the 43 reservoirs, 11 reservoirs are at full water capacity. Normal storage during the corresponding period is 69% of the live storage capacity of these reservoirs.
In the western region, water levels in 50 reservoirs fell slightly to 36.181 billion cubic metres from 36.263 billion cubic metres a week ago. The current water level is 97% of the total storage capacity of the reservoirs in the region, up from 88% in the same period last year.
The western region includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. Of the 50 reservoirs in the region, 29 reservoirs are at full capacity, while 11 are at 91-99% of the full reservoir levels. One reservoir was at 51-60% capacity, while the rest were between 71% and 90% water level capacity.
The water levels in 155 key reservoirs of the country as of Thursday fell slightly to 157.490 billion cubic metres from 157.671 billion cubic metres a week ago. The current water level is 87% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres, the data showed. Water levels in the 155 reservoirs were up 21% from a year ago and 14% above the average for the last 10 years.
In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in the reservoirs was 12.766 billion cubic metres, down from 12.986 billion cubic metres a week ago. The current water level is down at 64% of the live storage capacity, compared with 81% a year ago. Of the 11 reservoirs in the region, five reservoirs are at full capacity while one is below the 40% capacity level and the rest have capacity ranging from 90-51%, according to the report.
The water level in the 26 key reservoirs in the central region of India fell to 43.328 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 43.485 billion cubic metres last week, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current water level is 90% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs compared with 82% in the corresponding period last year. Of the 26 reservoirs in the region, four are at full capacity, seven are almost full at 91-99% of the full reservoir level, and two are at 40% and below capacity level.
In the eastern region, the water level was 16.103 billion cubic metres, down from 16.939 billion cubic metres last week. The water level as of Thursday is 77% of the live storage capacity against 76% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, and Bihar.
Out of the 155 reservoirs, 146 reported more than 80% of normal storage while nine reported storage levels of 80% of normal or below that, the data showed. Of the nine reservoirs, one had storage up to only 50% of the normal level.
Assam, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu have better storage in percentage terms compared with the same period last year. However, water storage has dropped year-on-year in Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Bihar, and Uttarakhand. States having equal storage to last year for the corresponding period are Goa and Gujarat, the report said.
Since Oct. 1, India has received 67.0 mm of rainfall. The normal rainfall is 65.0 mm for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
