NEW DELHI – The government on Thursday approved two railway projects for Andhra Pradesh and Bihar with a combined estimated cost of INR 67.98 billion. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the doubling of Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga and Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur Section covering 256 kilometres in Bihar with an outlay of INR 45.53 billion. The Cabinet also approved construction of a new rail line connecting Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh. The new railway line will come up between Errupalem and Namburu through Amaravati, covering 57 kilometres at a cost of INR 22.45 billion.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the doubling project will strengthen the connectivity to Nepal, northeast India and border areas. It will facilitate movement of passenger trains along with goods trains, resulting in the socio-economic growth of the region, he said.
The two projects covering eight districts in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 313 kilometres, the Ministry of Railway said in a statement. The Errupalem-Amaravati-Namburu new line project will provide connectivity to 168 villages and about 1.2 million population with nine new stations. The project will provide direct connectivity to Amaravati, the proposed capital of Andhra Pradesh, from Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata, Vaishnaw said, adding that it will improve mobility for industries and the population, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, Vaishnaw said.
The minister also stated that these are essential routes for transport of commodities such as agricultural products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, and cement. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 31 million tonnes per annum, he said.
The projects will generate employment of over 10 million human-days and will be completed in around four years. End
