MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha and West Bengal Thursday, owing to severe cyclonic storm Dana over northwest Bay of Bengal, it said in a release. Baleswar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsingpur Kendujhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khorda and Puri districts in Odisha are likely to receive extremely heavy showers till Friday, the department said.

The cyclone is also likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall in parts of South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hoogly, Kolkata and Bankura districts of Gangetic West Bengal till Friday, the weather bureau said. Impact of the cyclone is also likely to spill over to parts of Jharkhand, where the weather agency has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall during the same period.

There is moderate risk of flash flood over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of several places in Odisha and West Bengal. Inundation is also likely in some fully saturated soils and low-lying regions due to expected rainfall during the next 24 hours, according to the department.

In view of the severe cyclonic storm, the weather bureau has issued advisories for farmers in Odisha and West Bengal to shift the harvested produce to safer places. The agency has avised postponing the harvest of rice, maize, black gram, green gram, groundnut, vegetables and fruits till the cessation of rains. It has also advised withholding sowing of pre-rabi pulses and winter vegetables, and propping sugarcane by tying four to five plants together.

In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the bureau has advised farmers to collect and safely dispose of fallen fruits and vegetables to prevent the spread of fungal diseases. For harvested rice, it said that proper sun-drying should be ensured when weather conditions are clear to minimise moisture retention and reduce the risk of mould or spoilage.

The bureau has also sought arrangements for adequate drainage to avoid water logging in fields, mechanical support to young fruit plants, and staking of vegetables to prevent their lodging, according to the release.

The agency has also forecast heavy to heavy rainfall over parts of Kerela, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and south interior Karnataka in the southern peninsula till Friday. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of northeast India on Thursday, the department said.

The weather agency sees no significant rainfall over central, western, and northwest India during the week.  End
