MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a cyclone warning for the Odisha coast due to severe cyclonic storm 'Dana' over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, the department's regional centre in Bhubaneswar said in a report.

Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm, the department has issued a red alert for Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha for Thursday. These districts are likely to receive very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall during the day.

The weather bureau has also issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Puri, Khordha, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, and Dhenkanal districts of the state for Thursday. A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, while an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm. The red and orange alerts will continue for parts of the state till Friday due to heavy to very heavy rainfall, according to the weather department.

Severe cyclonic storm Dana is likely to move northwestwards and cross the northern Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island, close to Bhitarkanika and Dharma in Odisha during Thursday midnight and Friday morning. The weather system is likely to move with a wind speed of 100-110 km per hour.

Owing to the weather conditions, the Kolkata international airport is set to suspend all flight operations for about 15 hours from 1800 IST Thursday till 0900 IST Friday, according to a report by Live Mint. The Bhubaneswar airport will also shut flight operations for 16 hours – from 1700 IST Thursday till 0900 IST Friday.

Several train services have also been cancelled due to the weather conditions, the report said. The Eastern Railway has cancelled 190 local trains in West Bengal and the Southeastern Railway has cancelled over 150 express and passenger trains in Odisha from Wednesday to Friday. The East Coast Railway has cancelled 198 trains originating from or passing through Odisha, according to the report.

The weather bureau has sought that fishing operations in central and northern Bay of Bengal be suspended till Friday. The storm is expected to cause water levels to rise 1.0-2.0 metres above the astronomical tide, and this is likely to inundate low-lying areas of Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore districts during landfall.  End
